A number of colleagues from E.ON's Connah's Quay Power Station have embarked on a string of activities in support of the local Flintshire community as part of the company's team challenge programme.

Volunteers from E.ON's Operational Excellence team recently spent a day transforming an overgrown courtyard located in the Cancer Care Unit at Maelor Hospital in Wrexham. Tracey Hill, one of the volunteers from E.ON's Connah's Quay Power Station, said: "We're thrilled to have been able to help the Cancer Unit by transforming their outdoor area. Team spirits weren't dampened by the awful weather and everyone worked really hard to refresh the area and bring the garden back to life."

George Hanmer, Estates Manager at Maelor Hospital added: "We're absolutely thrilled with the result and very grateful to everyone who's been involved - from the funding support from the E.ON Community Team and Connah's Quay Power Station team for getting stuck in on the day."

The Flintshire charity work continues in September when E.ON colleagues plan to renovate the garden at Sydney Hall Court sheltered housing in Connah's Quay. A team of eight engineers will be transforming the communal garden and creating a raised bed for residents to grow their own vegetables.

The Connah's Quay team also holds a close relationship with Age Concern in Mold and participates in various charity activities fund raising events, such as bag packing and tea parties for the elderly.

E.ON finds volunteering opportunities for employees across the UK, working with schools, older people and other vulnerable groups as part of its wider community relations programme. In 2009, E.ON employees spent over 8,000 hours volunteering in their local communities.

Age Concern Merstham, Redhill and Reigate has celebrated the installation of energy efficient measures at its centre in Merstham, following a grant of nearly £10,000 from energy company E.ON.

The grant has been used to insulate the centre's roof, install new ‘A' rated double glazing and new radiators to make the building more efficient.

Tony Jenkin Jones, Community Relations Executive for E.ON, said: "We're absolutely delighted to see the results that the fund award has been able achieve for Age Concern in Merstham. The increased energy efficiency will improve the facilities for the community, reduce the hall's impact on the environment and save on costs."

Michael Ward, Chief Officer for the Merstham centre said: We were very thankful to receive the grant from E.ON. The new energy measures will play an important role in the welfare of the older generation who visit the centre and help us keep costs down too."

Dove Cottage Day Hospice in Stathern, near Melton Mowbray has been awarded a grant from E.ON's Employee Community Fund, courtesy of E.ON employee Richard Hardy.

Dove Cottage is an independent organisation offering palliative day care and support to people living with cancer and other life threatening conditions in North East Leicestershire, Rutland and South East Nottinghamshire.

The grant of almost £2,000 will be used to fund a Nintendo Wii Game Console, as well as outdoor games and soft footballs to help people with Parkinsons Disease with their co-ordination.
St Mary's Primary School in Burton Latimer has been awarded a grant from E.ON's new Employee Community Fund, courtesy of parent and E.ON employee Andrew Barrow.

The grant of £2,000 will allow the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at St Mary's to buy new laptop computers which will help support and enhance the children's development and learning.

Andrew, an employee in E.ON's Brand & Communications team, said: "The PTA does great work supporting all the school's fundraising events and this donation will make a real difference to both the children and staff.

"The school's a real centre of community life and I'm delighted that E.ON is able to help in this way."

The E.ON Employee Community fund invites applications from employees based in the UK for funding of up to £2,000 for charities and community organisations that support education projects or vulnerable consumers.

The mini laptops connect to the school's internet network and can be used in classrooms to help with learning activities.

Tony Collins, head teacher at St Mary's, said: "A recent Ofsted inspection said our children would really benefit from having free access to a computer during lessons other than ICT, for things like topic research. Thanks to this grant we're well on our way to achieving that.

"I'm really proud of the involvement we get from our PTA and from all our parents, they really work hard to give our children as good an experience at school as they can. It's great that companies like E.ON share that commitment and help reward the efforts of their staff in the community."

A team of eager volunteers from E.ON's Westwood Business Park offices recently spent two days transforming the playground at Wyken Croft Primary School in Coventry.

The team were tasked with revamping an unused area of the playground into a sensory garden with different lights, sounds and smells, as well as developing an area for planting for vegetables, where the children could learn and play.

Armed with a collection of gardening and painting equipment, the team transformed the area with an abundance of flowers and plants, and painted plant pots, playground tyres and anything else they could find in vibrant colours.

Martin Tranter, Site Manager at Wyken Croft Primary, said: "I'd like to say a huge thank you on behalf of the staff and children to all the volunteers for their hard work.

"They have transformed an unused dull space into a fantastic outdoor learning area and brightened up the whole playground with vibrant colours. The E.ON team worked with great purpose and humour and are a great credit to their company."

Cathie Hodson, one of the willing volunteers and key organiser of the event, said: "Taking part in this community challenge didn't seem like hard work, it was genuinely a pleasure which gave us immense job satisfaction and we'd love to do something like this again.

"We hope the new area will be an inspiration to the children of Wyken Croft Primary School in both their learning and play."

E.ON has awarded Radcliffe on Trent Junior School with a grant from the company's Employee Community Fund, thanks to parent and E.ON employee Julia Jones.

Radcliffe on Trent Junior School, which has around 260 pupils aged between seven and 11, supports the learning of children with special needs by including them in mainstream education.

The grant of £2,000 will be used to help buy equipment for a new sensory garden which will benefit all children, particularly those with special needs who may find the main playground intimidating. The garden will also provide a quieter area on sunny days for those children who find learning difficult to have one to one sessions with support workers.

Julia Jones, Senior Regulatory Analyst based at E.ON's Sherwood Park offices, said: "As a parent and member of the school's PTA I'm very grateful that E.ON can help in this way.

"This donation will mean we can press ahead with sensory garden's development over the summer months in readiness for the new term."

Steve Arnold, Headteacher at Radcliffe on Trent Junior School, said: "We're extremely grateful to E.ON to receive such support for our Sensory Garden Project. Not only is £2,000 a very generous grant, it is not the only help the company's given us.

"An army of E.ON employees recently dug a pond and a path for us; a project that would have cost the school a lot of money. The children, staff and governors will all benefit from the lovely work E.ON has carried out and funded and would like to say a huge thank you."

In what appears to be an increasing trend, E.ON's distribution engineers either discovered or were alerted to a total of 14 electricity poles that had been cut down using chainsaws in the last week in July alone.

John Crackett, Managing Director of E.ON's Distribution business, said: "Like everyone else, we've seen metal thefts increasing for a number of years but what we hadn't seen before were thieves going to such lengths.

"Simply put, they use a chainsaw to cut down the wooden poles and get access to our cabling.

"Even ignoring the danger of cutting down a pole that has wires carrying 11,000 volts at the top of it and leaving those wires, which could still be live, hanging near to the ground, this costs us money and causes massive inconvenience to our customers."

The attacks in E.ON central England area were:

Farmer found pole cut, with live conductors hanging three feet from the ground in Welton in Lincolnshire on Saturday (July 31). Around 40 customers were left without power while repairs were carried out;

Engineers discovered two poles cut and wires rolled up and ready to go in Doddington in Lincolnshire on Saturday (July 31). More than 1,850 customers were left without power. One person has been arrested by police in connection with the incident;

A pole was cut down and left lying just off its side in Gringley-on-the-Hill in Nottinghamshire on Friday (July 30). Around 30 customers were left without power;

A second pole was discovered in a field being supported only by overhead wires in Gringley-on-the-Hill on Friday (July 30);

Two poles were cut down and cabling stolen in Misterton Carr in Nottinghamshire last Monday (July 26), leaving more than 260 customers without power;

Engineers found two further poles in Misterton Carr on the same day, both had been cut and both were being supported by overhead lines;

In Swinethorpe in Nottinghamshire engineers found three poles that had been cut down and the wiring stolen on July 24-25, leaving more than 200 customers without power; and

In a field in Wednesfield near Wolverhampton, a wooden pole was cut through in broad daylight, cutting power to more than 4,600 customers on July 26th.

Anyone with information about the attacks is being urged to call the police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

E.ON is one of the UK's leading power and gas companies - generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas - and is part of the E.ON group, one of the world's largest investor-owned power and gas companies. We employ more than 15,000 people in the UK and more than 88,000 worldwide;

E.ON's retail business is a leading energy supplier in the UK with around 5.3 million electricity and gas customers, covering domestic, SME and industrial. E.ON also offers central heating and boiler care;

Our distribution business, branded Central Networks, provides a reliable supply to around 10 million people in central England through 133,000km of underground and overhead cables - enough to go round the Earth more than three times - and via almost 94,000 substations. The company covers an area from the Peak District in the north to parts of Bristol in the south, and from the Welsh Borders to the Lincolnshire Coast;

The generation business produces enough electricity to cater for the needs of around eight million homes from a portfolio of world-class gas-, coal- and oil-fired power stations;

We're a market leader in UK combined heat and power (CHP) with 12 sites supplying over 500MW of electricity and in excess of 900MW of heat;

We're one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 20 wind farms located from Cambridgeshire to Kintyre. We own and operate one of the UK's largest dedicated biomass power stations at Lockerbie. Combined, our renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester;

Our green development portfolio could power over a million homes and displace the emission of almost two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by building new onshore and offshore wind farms, biomass power stations, and marine power schemes;

We recently launched our first wave power generator, which is the first in UK waters and which is capable of generating 750kW of renewable energy;

Our target is to cut the carbon released by each kW of electricity we generate by 10% between 2005-2012, having already reduced it by 20% since 1990;

We have 1,500MW of renewable capacity under development in the UK;

We have installed over 630,000 cavity wall and loft installation measures since 2005, as well as energy efficient boilers and smart meters to help customers manage their energy more efficiently;

We are investing £50 million in new technologies and approaches over 10 years, through the Energy Technologies Institute;

We have Biodiversity Action Plans at many of our sites which align us with the UK target of significantly reducing biodiversity loss;

E.ON Group has announced it intends to reduced the carbon intensity of its generation by 50% by 2030 (on 1990 levels);

E.ON Group aims to spend €8bn between 2007 and 2012 on renewable generation and climate protection activities.

This summer has been no different with dozens of Sand Martins making the mammoth journey from Africa to nest amongst the coal ash piles.

With their traditional nesting sites in river banks and cliffs significantly reducing in number, the Sand Martins now make their nests at the power station by digging into the vertical ash faces to form a tunnel that can be between 35cm to 1m long.

With the Sand Martins being regular visitors, the team at Ratcliffe help the birds by creating a distinct vertical face which helps to make it easier for the birds to form their nests. They also ensure no work is carried out whilst the birds are in residence to ensure they can raise their young in peace.

Gary Ulliot, Plant Manager of E.ON's Ratcliffe on Soar Power Station, said: "The team do a fantastic job, not just to help prepare for the Sand Martins, but by ensuring what is essentially an industrial site also provides a habitat for a huge range of wildlife and plants.

"Many people are surprised to hear the variety of creatures that make their home at the power station but it's something we've worked really hard at to support. The plans we have in place make sure we can provide the highest quality habitat and the team's efforts have been rewarded with an amazing number of plants and animals taking full advantage."

In another milestone for the burgeoning marine energy industry, it will be the first time a P2 machine - designed and constructed by Pelamis Wave Power - is tested.

Amaan Lafayette, E.ON's Marine Development Manager, said: "This is the beginning of an exciting period in the development of marine energy. Vagr Atferd is capable of generating 750kW of renewable energy and this period of testing will help us determine what we need to do to ensure that marine energy makes the transition from development to commercial deployment."

The testing programme will increase in intensity every 12 months to examine the viability of the P2 wave energy convertor, which was officially launched by Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond in May.

The machine is 180m long - or as long as the Gherkin building in London is tall - and weighs approximately 1,300 tonnes. The motion of the waves produces electricity by driving a set of hydraulic rams at the hinged joints, which link the cylindrical sections of the device.

Vagr Atferd (in Old Norse, Vágr Atferð means wave power) was named by Matthew Rendall of Stromness Primary School in Orkney, following a competition. Its deployment at EMEC - a research facility based in Stromness, Orkney - is part of E.ON's first significant investment in wave power.

E.ON is a leader in renewable energy and currently owns and operates 20 wind farms from Cornwall to Kintyre, including Robin Rigg in the Solway Firth, which is one of the UK's largest offshore wind farms. E.ON is also a partner in the London Array, which will be the world's largest offshore wind farm when complete, together with DONG Energy and Masdar.

In February, the Carbon Trust awarded funding from the Marine Renewables Proving Fund (MRPF) to the six most promising marine energy technologies to speed up the deployment of full scale prototypes. The funding provided to Pelamis has supported the design and construction of the P2 device and its installation and testing at the EMEC.

Whitecross Nursery School in Derby has been awarded a grant from E.ON's new Employee Community Fund, courtesy of parent and E.ON employee Clair Hatton.

The grant of £2,000 will fund new planting equipment and gardening tools to be used by the children to grow fruit and vegetables which will also help them learn about sustainable living and their impact on the environment.

Clair Hatton, Change & Engagement Business Partner at E.ON, said: "It makes me feel very proud to be able to present the school with this generous donation from E.ON.

"The new garden area will benefit all children and help teach them about healthy eating, as well as sustainability and the environment."

Clair handed over the cheque earlier this week, as the children celebrated the end of term with a tea party and wore party hats with a sustainable theme which they'd made in class from recycled materials.

Janet Mitchell, Headteacher at Whitecross Nursery School, said: "The children, parents, governors and staff at Whitecross Nursery School are delighted to have been chosen to receive a donation from E.ON's Employee Community Fund.

"The new gardening area will enhance our outside play area and hopefully instil a love of gardening from an early age."

The E.ON Employee Community fund invites applications from employees based in the UK for funding of up to £2,000 for charities and community organisations that support education projects or vulnerable consumers.

EllenorLions Hospices in Northfleet has been awarded a grant of almost £2,000 from E.ON's Employee Community Fund, courtesy of E.ON employee Kevin Braine.

EllenorLions Hospices is a local charity which provides care for adults and young people with cancer and other progressive, life threatening illnesses.

The grant will be used to buy sensory equipment incorporating different sights, sounds and colours to help stimulate patients with sensory and neurological impairment.

Kevin's wife was a volunteer at one of the hospice shops until she unfortunately became a patient herself. She sadly died a week after hearing the grant application had been successful.

Kevin, who works as an engineer at E.ON's Kingsnorth Power Station, visited the hospice earlier this week to present them with the cheque donation from E.ON.

"We were delighted to hear that the Employee Community Fund application had been successful," said Kevin.

"The staff at EllenorLions are a compassionate group of people; many of them are volunteers who work tirelessly to put others before themselves.

"The hospice has cared for my mother and my wife and I'm very proud to be able to present them with this cheque.

"The support EllenorLions Hospices provides is wonderful and, thanks to E.ON, the new sensory equipment will go on to enhance many patients experience."

Tracie Dempster, Head of our Children's and Young People's Service for EllenorLions Hospices, said: "EllenorLions Hospices relies heavily on the generosity of our supporters and we're incredibly grateful to both Kevin and E.ON for this donation.

"The new sensory equipment which can be taken into homes will prove a valuable resource. Many of our children are too ill to travel so it will make a huge difference to be able to take the ‘sensory room' to them."

A team of 40 willing volunteers from E.ON's Commercial team recently spent a day revamping the grounds of Netherfield Primary School into safe and fun learning areas.

The huge project involved transforming an overgrown pond area into somewhere safe for the children to learn about nature and pond life. The team also cleared and tidied an allotment to provide an environment for children to learn about and nurture plants and vegetables from seeds, as well as creating an outdoor learning classroom.

Hannah Madeley, Teacher at Netherfield Primary School, said: "From a teaching point of view it's wonderful to have an outdoor classroom with enough room to seat a large group of children. The pond area too is now a vibrant and stimulating learning space.

"Children who were involved in painting plant pots on the ‘transformation' day feel a real sense of ownership and pride in their work - and the pots look beautiful against the backdrop of the new pond area.

"Both staff and children are thrilled with the outcome, and it was a pleasure to work with such a motivated, friendly and enthusiastic team, who've created a place which children will be able to enjoy and learn in for years to come. We would like to thank everyone involved for such an enjoyable and successful project."

Frank Barrow one of the E.ON volunteers involved in the day, said: "The team really enjoyed being able put something back into the local community by taking part in this challenge. A huge sense of achievement was felt by all and it was so rewarding to see the outcome of the school's vision by the end of the day. We hope children will continue to enjoy our handiwork for many years to come."

E.ON finds volunteering opportunities for employees across the UK, working with schools, older people and other vulnerable groups as part of its wider community relations programme. In 2009, E.ON employees spent over 8,000 hours volunteering in their local communities.

Monty Panesar from Sussex County Cricket Club officially unveiled Rampion as the name of the proposed offshore wind farm at today's celebration and presented Davison High School with their prize of £1,000.

The competition received more than 2,500 entries, with Rampion - the county flower of Sussex - being the most popular with local people.

Vaughan Weighill, Project Manager for the site, said: "We've been overwhelmed by the response to the naming competition - we never expected so many people to get involved but it's great to see local people getting behind it and having their say on what the proposed site should be called.

"The creativity and diversity of names submitted to the competition was fantastic and we're really proud to have a name that has been nominated by local children and chosen by the people of Sussex. A big thank you to all those schools who submitted a potential name and to those who voted."

The winning school, Davison High School, received a cheque for £1,000, with the three runners up, The Globe Primary School, Fairlight Primary & Nursery School, and Worthing High School, winning £500 for their school.

The proposed Rampion offshore wind farm is located 13km off the Sussex coast and has the potential to produce 650MW of power, enough to supply around 400,000 homes[i] with renewable electricity.

In January 2010, The Crown Estate awarded E.ON the exclusive right to seek consent to build a large-scale offshore wind farm off the Sussex coast, as part of the Round 3 UK Offshore wind programme.

It is still early days for the Rampion site with plans to submit the planning application in 2012.

We employ around 16,000 people in the UK and more than 88,000 worldwide;

The generation business produces enough electricity to cater for the needs of around eight million homes from a portfolio of world-class gas-, coal- and oil-fired power stations;

Combined, our renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester;

Our green development portfolio could power over a million homes and displace the emission of almost two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by building new onshore and offshore wind farms, biomass power stations, and marine power schemes;

We recently launched our first wave power generator, which is the first in UK waters and which is capable of generating 750kW of renewable energy;

Our target is to cut the carbon released by each kW of electricity we generate by 10% between 2005-2012, having already reduced it by 20% since 1990;

We have 1,500MW of renewable capacity under development;

Having been named E.ON's Charity of the Year, Cancer Research UK has seen the first fruits of that partnership when they were presented with a cheque for £50,000 by the company.

The donation, part-funded through efforts by staff at E.ON's Nottingham offices, will be used to help support their groundbreaking work into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The charity was chosen by nearly 2,500 colleagues who earlier this year voted Cancer Research UK as their favourite. As Charity of the Year, Cancer Research UK will provide a focus for the generosity that colleagues show in their fundraising efforts.

Claire Rowney, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Cancer Research UK, said: "E.ON's donation of £50,000 is a fantastic start to a year of fund-raising by the company. The donation will allow us to fund one of our cancer information nurses, to provide a confidential service for anyone with concerns about cancer for a year.

"Cancer Research UK is funded entirely by the general public, and so without the generous support of individuals, and companies like E.ON, we would not be able to continue our vital work, helping to save more lives and achieve our vision to beat cancer."

Jeremy Davies, Director of Brand and Communications at E.ON, said: "I'm delighted to be able to present Cancer Research UK with this donation, which will help them in their work to beat cancer.

"The charity is close to the hearts of many of our employees and I hope we'll continue to make a difference in supporting them as our chosen charity for the remainder of this year."

E.ON will continue to work with Cancer Research UK throughout this year to provide a range of fundraising opportunities to colleagues and support those getting involved.
