E.ON team raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care in an ‘Apprentice’ style challenge

Two teams from energy company E.ON recently headed back to the shop floor, in an Apprentice-style team challenge to drum up additional funds for two Solihull charity shops.

Two teams from the Brand and Communications function, normally based at the company's Coventry HQ, spent a day competing against each other to raise as much money as possible for the Marie Curie shops in Knowle and Shirley.

The teams were captained by department Personal Assistants Fiona Nicholls and Jo Gallagher, who initiated some healthy competition between the two shops.

And the team's certainly brought home the bacon, with the Shirley store, one of Marie Curie's most successful shops, seeing an uplift of 131% on normal takings. And the charity's Knowle shop achieving an amazing 603% increase on usual takings. A result even Alan Sugar would be proud of.

Fiona Nicholls, Personal Assistant to the Director of Brand and Communications at E.ON, said: "The day was so much more successful than we'd hoped, as well as being incredibly rewarding. With lots of hard work and planning, the teams were able to raise an enormous amount of money.

"It was astonishing how generous the public were and the community spirit really showed throughout the day.  There was a real buzz as staff were rushed off their feet with customers and local businesses becoming increasingly aware of what we were doing and showing their support. Marie Curie was over the moon with the teams efforts "

Mike Straney, Corporate Volunteer Manager at Marie Curie Cancer Care, said "It's brilliant that E.ON employees are taking time out from their normal working week to find a new way to volunteer for the charity. Every penny raised will help us fund care for terminally ill people in the local community - at home and in our Solihull hospice."

E.ON finds volunteering opportunities for employees across the UK, working with schools, older people and other vulnerable groups as part of its wider community relations programme. In 2009, E.ON employees spent over 8,000 hours volunteering in their local communities.
