Children and donkeys in Leeds harness the power of the sun thanks to E.ON’s Sustainable Energy fund
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Judith Elliott, recently visited the Elizabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys in Eccup to celebrate the installation of solar powered fencing which was made possible thanks to a £5,264 award from E.ON's Sustainable Energy Fund.
The solar powered fencing, which keeps the donkeys safely in their paddocks, was installed at the charity's five centres in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Sidmouth and Ivybridge.
Each centre is home to specially trained donkeys that provide riding therapy for more than 150 children with educational needs every week.
John Akers, Chief Executive of the Elizabeth Svendsen Trust, said: ""We are truly grateful to E.ON for awarding our charity with over £5,000 to pay for the solar energisers.
"This is enough funding to help power all five of our centres which provide unique donkey-riding therapy to children with special needs."
Tony Jenkin Jones, Community Relations Executive for E.ON, said: "The teams at the Elizabeth Svendsen Trust are incredibly passionate about sustainable energy it's our hope that this award will make all the difference to them and to the fantastic facilities they have in Leeds as well as other parts of the country."
"The Trust provides an amazing service for so many children and it's all free of charge from the charity so we're absolutely delighted to be able to award them this funding, so they can harness a renewable technology and reduce their costs."
The Sustainable Energy Fund is backed up by a dedicated web resource which provides top tips on energy efficiency and sustainability and full details of how to apply for a grant. To access it go to www.eon-uk.com/sustainableenergyfund. The next deadline for applications is 16th October 2009.
