E.ON helps Cumbrian primary school keep warm this winter

Still time for other local community groups to apply for next round of  E.ON's Sustainable Energy Fund

Energy company E.ON has given a £5,700 grant towards the cost of installing an air source heat pump at Stoneraise Community Primary School in Durdar, Carlisle.

The cash was used to help the school pay for an air source heat pump (ASHP) which will provide energy efficient heating for the school hall. The ASHP will be powered by a 5kW wind turbine.

Sally Shenton, Operations Manager for E.ON's nearby Robin Rigg wind farm, said: "I'm delighted that E.ON was able to contribute towards such an exciting project.

"The school was looking to replace their existing inefficient heating system, to minimise their impact on the environment, and to make significant cost savings, and we were more than happy to help them achieve this."

Andrew Mason, Head Teacher at the school, said: ""So far, the ASHP has exceeded all of our expectations.

"During a trial run, it was bringing the temperature in the heating system up to 50 degrees Celsius, at an estimated cost of only 20p per hour.

"We think we'll save up to £3,000 each year on our heating and oil bills. Not only does this ease the pressure on school budgets, it makes an enormous contribution to reducing our carbon emissions."

E.ON, one of the UK's leading renewable electricity generators, launched its Sustainable Energy Fund this year to help community groups and not-for-profit organisations develop more sustainable energy measures.

The Sustainable Energy Fund is backed up by a dedicated web resource which provides top tips on energy efficiency and sustainability and full details of how to apply for a grant. To access it go to www.eon-uk.com/sustainableenergyfund

The next deadline for applications is 16th October 2009.

Notes to editors:

  • Robin Rigg wind farm, once complete, will be one of the UK's largest offshore wind farms with the potential to provide enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of 122,000 homes. The 60 turbine wind farm is due to become operational later this year.
  • E.ON is one of the UK's leading power and gas companies - generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas - and is part of the E.ON group, one of the world's largest investor-owned power and gas companies. We employ around 17,000 people in the UK and over 92,000 worldwide;
  • We're one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 20 wind farms located from Cornwall to Northern Ireland. We own one of the UK's largest dedicated biomass power stations at Lockerbie. Combined, our renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester.
