E.ON UK lodges application for 10 turbine wind farm in County Durham

E.ON, one of the UK’s leading green generators, has applied to Sedgefield Borough Council to build its £26m Butterwick Moor wind farm.

The scheme, which would see 10 turbines build around 3.3km north east of Sedgefield, could save almost 44,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every year, or the equivalent of taking 13,000 cars off the road.

Alex Fornal, Project Developer at E.ON UK, said: “We obviously believe this is a great site for a wind farm, especially as it’s next door to an already consented wind farm, and we’re hopeful that the council will agree with us.

“It’s certainly worth pointing out that this scheme alone would be able to produce around a third of the 2010 green generation targets for County Durham and 5.5% for the region as a whole.

“In addition, it could produce enough electricity for all the homes in Fishburn, Trimdon and Sedgefield twice over.”

The application calls for 10 turbines, rated at between 2MW and 2.5MW, which would be up to 110m tall to blade tip.

A community fund of up to £625,000 would be set up to benefit local communities should the application be successful.

Notes to editors:
* E.ON is the UK’s largest integrated power and gas company – generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas – and is part of the E.ON group, the world's largest investor-owned power and gas company. We employ around 15,000 people in the UK;
* E.ON is one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 20 wind farms located from Cornwall to Northern Ireland. We also burn biomass material mixed with coal in two of our power stations and are currently building the UK’s largest dedicated biomass power station at Lockerbie. We own the largest hydro power station in England and Wales. Combined, our renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester.
