15 September 2009 13:44 Central Networks' Customer Panel gives power to public opinion
Representing some of the 9.4 million people who rely on Central Networks for a power supply may seem a daunting task, but that's exactly the role of the new Customer Panel which is designed to give people a greater say on the future of energy provision across central England.
Whether it is climate change, preparing for sudden weather emergencies or just keeping the lights on, Central Networks is finding out the public's priorities as it shapes its power networks for the future.
Panel members include representatives of the police, local authorities, the Major Energy Users Council, the Environment Agency, Nottingham Elders Forum, Consumer Focus and the RNID.
"The Panel provides us with the perfect way to keep in touch with our customers' expectations, as well as providing an opportunity to inform them about, and seek their feedback on, our future plans," said Central Networks Managing Director John Crackett, who chaired the first meeting.
The Panel is the first of its kind for distribution companies in the UK and will discuss issues such as doorstep crime, security of supply, protecting the interests of vulnerable customers or the new connection process.
"It's always nice to hear when we're doing well, but it's probably more important to find out about the areas where we need to improve," said John.
"We want to know what we're like to deal with as a business, what's important to our customers and how we can improve for the future.
"We believe the Panel will make a real difference by giving customers a strong voice with the company and allowing us to keep track of their views and to take prompt action when problems crop up."
Panel member David Haughton, from the RNID, said the panel was one way to improve customers' experience of the industry.
He said: "It's all too easy to forget how vital and complicated utility supply can be and how we all take it for granted - until the power goes off.
"I came away with a sense of how dedicated Central Networks is and I'm pleased to be working with them to improve accessibility to their service."
