A Boston children’s group is to build a new wildlife garden after winning a grant from Central Networks, the electricity distribution company for central England.
The company, part of E.ON UK, has donated £1,200 to the Park Community Children’s Group to turn an area of unused scrubland into an educational nature spot complete with ladybird boxes, a butterfly garden, a hedgehog house, and a wildflower meadow.
The project one is of the winning applicants for the company’s £70,000 Safer Environment Fund, which makes money available for projects that can demonstrate a lasting and positive effect on the local environment.
Phil Wilson, Customer Operations Manager for Central Networks, said: “Most of the children in the playgroup live in built-up areas and have little chance to get out to the countryside. This project will create a safe and secure wildlife area where they can explore nature and the environment without having to travel too far.
“We’re delighted to be able to help and would encourage more local groups to apply for funds to help improve their community and environment.”
Pat Rennick, from the Park Community Children’s Group, said: ““Being able to observe different species of birds, insects and animals in the wild will give the children an opportunity to view nature in a way they have not been able to before and will encourage them to respect the environment.
“Right now the area is rough, unusable and littered with debris, but with the help of Central Networks we are going to turn it into something beautiful that the children and their families can take pride in and enjoy.
The new fund for 2007 is open to all local community groups and not for profit organisations with their own bank account located in the Central Networks distribution region, which covers central England. Groups can apply for grants of up to £2,500. For more information and to download an application form visit www.central-networks.co.uk/sef
