19 January 2007 00:00 UPDATE – Central Networks restores 269,000 customers, still 35,000 off power in region – 0800hrs
Central Networks, the electricity distribution company for central England, has managed to restore 269,315 customers affected by the gale force wind of yesterday but 35,325 remain without power.
In the East Midlands around 14,250 customers are without power and, in the West Midlands, around 20,900 remain without power.
Jim Lightfoot, Director of Customer and Network Operations, said: “Our engineers worked long into the night and started again before first light this morning and have done a great job in getting 269,000 customers back on power.
“Today is going to be an equally tough day – we still have hundreds of faults across our patch that we need to get round and we’re also expecting to be hit by high winds again this afternoon.
“But I can reassure all of our customers that we’re doing everything that we can to get them back on power as quickly as possible and our engineers will be working hard – and safely – to get those faults fixed.”

Customers are advised to stay away from any fallen power cables that they might come across and to contact Central Networks on 0800 056 8090 (East Midlands) or 0800 328 1111 (West Midlands) with details of the location.
“At times like this we’d also ask people to check on any vulnerable neighbours that they might have to make sure that they’re OK,” said Jim.
People should keep their freezers closed wherever possible and should leave a light on so that they know when the power has been restored. In addition, sensitive electrical equipment should be switched off.
