21 October 2004 00:00 Metering Services’ old work wear goes to worthy new home

Metering Services, the metering business run by Central Networks, has put its old work wear to good use by donating it to workers at a Romanian orphanage and nearby villages.

Coats, t-shirts, trousers and fleeces have all been donated to the Hope Carriers Trust, who will take the kit to Oradea in Romania later this month on a truck filled with supplies and donations for the ‘House of Joy’ orphanage.

Andrew Philpotts, Planning Engineer for Central Networks, said: “I’m pleased that the work gear is going to such worthy new homes.

“When the company replaced its old work wear we wanted to make sure the clothes, which are all in very good condition, were not wasted. We obviously have to make sure that it doesn’t get into the wrong hands as they carry our logo – so donating them to a charity abroad seemed the perfect answer.”

The Hope Carriers Charity was set up seven years ago after its founder, Arthur Etheridge, visited Romania and was moved by the poor conditions the children and local people were living in. Arthur and the charity’s volunteers have made several trips back over the years and support the orphanage and several community projects.
Arthur said: “The 20 bags of clothes will all be put to good use. The work wear will be distributed by a co-ordinator at the orphanage who knows the villagers and their needs.

“There are many local people who would appreciate the warm clothes, including a group of teenagers who I found living on a rubbish heap a few years ago.

“They’ve now found a home at the orphanage and attend a local school – they’ll certainly be getting some of the gear.”

The charity relies on local support and donations to carry on its work in the Oradea area of Romania, which is on the border with Hungary. As well as clothes the trust will be taking over cots, prams, baby clothes and an array of baby supplies and Christmas presents for the children.

Andrew said: “Our work wear is replaced regularly so I’m sure we’ll be able to make further donations to the charity in the future.”
