31 March 2004 00:00 A wheely powerful message for kids
The wheels on the East Midlands Electricity (EME) Power Discovery Bus are going round again as they make their annual journey to primary schools across the region.
Last week, school children at Westgate Junior School in Lincoln spent the day on EME’s bus learning all about electricity and electrical safety.
The children were able to watch a safety video, and build electrical circuits with buzzers, motors and lights. The bus also houses its very own ‘Hazard Valley’ – a large model landscape featuring urban and rural scenes full of potential hazards for children to spot.
The bus has been specially designed to teach schoolchildren across the East Midlands about the dangers of electricity, while also supporting the national curriculum.
Jerry Carnell, Safety Adviser at EME, said: “We run the Power Discovery Bus as a free educational resource to schools across the EME region.
“Throughout the UK, approximately 120 children a year are injured in electricity related incidents so we really want to help children understand the dangers involved.
“We’ve done our best to make the bus fun at the same time as getting across a very important safety message, so hopefully they’ve all had a great day out at the same time as learning lots.”
Since its launch in 2001 the bus has visited over 100 schools, reaching more than 10,000 schoolchildren.
