18 December 2003 00:00 EME STAFF HELP KEEP THE REGIONS LIGHTS ON OVER CHRISTMAS

Deck the halls, get out the tinsel and decorate the tree, Christmas is coming and most people in the East Midlands are looking forward to well earned break from work.

But, come December 25, when everyone is opening their presents and tucking into the turkey, EME engineers and call centre staff will be hard at work to ensure customers have the electricity they need to enjoy Christmas.

On Christmas Day itself, a full team of engineers and call centre staff will carry out their normal day-to-day duties, but Christmas won’t be completely forgotten.

Many of the staff working on Christmas Day will be bringing in special treats to eat at break times, including turkey sandwiches, mince pies and chocolates.

Customer operations manager Phil Wilson said: “EME distributes power to its customers 24-hours a day, seven-days-a-week, all year round. Unlike the majority of businesses, we don’t close for Christmas.

“Our engineers will be on hand in the unlikely event that there are any problems on our power lines or cables, and our call centre staff will be ready to take any calls from customers.”

East Midlands Electricity delivers a reliable electricity supply to 2.4 million customers throughout the East Midlands region. It has over 44,000 km of underground cable and 24,000 km of overhead line, enough to go twice around the world.

Phil said: “We obviously need a full team ready for action regardless of the day or the time over the festive season, but we hope that they won’t be needed and that it’ll be a quiet Christmas for our engineers and call centre staff, and for our customers.”
