24 November 2003 00:00 East Midlands Electricity helps raise cash with charity football match
EME employees have joined forces with a contractor to raise £1,359 in memory of one of their colleagues.
Dave Betts, a jointers mate from Whitwick, died in a motorcycle accident in August of this year. His workmates then decided to work with Walgrave Contract Services of Northampton, one of EME’s contractors, to raise money in his memory with a special football challenge.
More than 120 people attended the event at Ibstock Welfare FC in Leicestershire. Dave’s family were on hand to cheer the teams on and his two children, Janine (12) and Nathan (14), both came on to score, with Walgrave eventually beating EME 7-5.
Organisers thanked both Ibstock Welfare FC for the use of the pitch and referee Sean Willoughby, who gave his time free of charge.
Dave’s family also thanked everyone who played, supported and donated money. The evening was so successful that it is hoped that it will become an annual event.
The money was raised through donations from friends, a raffle at the event and through match funding from Powergen, which owns East Midlands Electricity.
Dave’s family has decided to split the cash between When You Wish Upon A Star and Glenfield Hospital’s *** Care Appeal.
