13 November 2003 00:00 ‘Retired’ EME Land Rovers continue to keep people safe
East Midlands Electricity (EME) has donated one Land Rover Defender to Derbyshire Constabulary and another to the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (PDMRO).
The two vehicles are being replaced with new models by the end of the year so EME were happy to find a good home for their redundant 4x4s.
Ellie Barnes, from Fleet Management at EME, said: “We were asked whether there was any chance of us donating a vehicle to the police or Mountain Rescue and we jumped at the chance to get involved in a community project.”
EME uses its Land Rovers to carry out repairs and maintenance in the more remote rural areas of the region where supply is predominantly overhead lines.
“The main reason we passed the vehicles on was because of high mileage so it’s great to know that they’re going to be of use now we’ve finished with them,” said Ellie.
“One of the Defenders was already fitted with a winch so it was ideal for Mountain Rescue, and the other one is being used by the Derbyshire Rural Crime Unit.”
The Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation has been helping walkers and climbers over the last 40 years within the Peak District National Park.
Mike France, Chairman of the PDMRO said: “This Land Rover may well have finished its work for East Midlands Electricity, but it is just starting a new job for Mountain Rescue, saving lives.
“I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation, to thank East Midlands Electricity for their support in helping us to help others within the community.”
