08 April 2003 00:00 FISHERMEN ARE TOLD TO ‘LOOK OUT AND LOOK UP’
Local anglers are being encouraged to “Look Out and Look Up!” when fishing with carbon fibre rods or poles near overhead power lines.
That is the message East Midlands Electricity is sending to fishermen in a bid to make sure they are informed of the potential dangers posed by overhead lines.
Anglers should always check for overhead power lines before fishing in rivers, canals and lakes.
Carbon fibre rods and poles are good conductors of electricity so fishermen need to take extra care when fishing close to power lines. In addition, electricity at high voltages can jump gaps, so a rod does not even have to come into direct contact with a line.
Power lines carried on wooden poles can be difficult to see, particularly among trees and hedges. They can also be mistaken for telephone wires, but these overhead lines can carry a potentially fatal voltage of up to 132,000 volts.
It is difficult to estimate the height and distance of lines from the ground, so anglers must remember to keep an adequate safety distance – at least 30 metres away from the line measured along the ground.
Many modern fishing poles are easily long enough to reach overhead power lines. Anglers should remember to carry rods and poles parallel to the ground to avoid accidental contact.
Jerry Carnell, EME’s safety adviser, said: “While electrical accidents are rare, they can result in serious injury or even death.
“EME advises anglers to remember the safety rules and respect the power of electricity to ensure an enjoyable and safe fishing trip. “
Jerry has these simple ‘do’s and don’ts’ to remember:
Modern Carbon fibre rods DO conduct electricity so ‘Look Out and Look Up’;
DON’T fish anywhere near overhead power lines, poles and pylons - DON’T take the chance;
DO remember that electricity can jump gaps – so you don’t necessarily have to touch electrical equipment to get a lethal shock.
Many responsible waterway owners and fishing clubs post signs warning of the dangers of nearby overhead wires DON’T ignore them

Notes to Editors:
EME is actively involved with the ‘National Angling and Electricity Safety Group’. The group exists to develop and promote safe practice with regards to electricity at fishing lakes and waterways in the UK. Work is underway to produce practical advice about the risks of electricity lines near fished waterways. This guidance should be available later this year.
The ‘National Angling and Electricity Safety Group’ consists of representatives of the Electricity Association, some electricity distribution companies, angling clubs and associations, angling equipment manufacturers and waterway owners and operators.
