02 January 2003 00:00 Nottingham school celebrates pupil’s success in East Midlands Electricity competition

Lily Beaven has just become even more popular with friends, family and teachers after winning a competition organised by East Midlands Electricity.

The eight-year-old, a pupil at Nottingham’s Claremont Primary and Nursery School, in Claremont road, scooped £1,000 for her school and a PlayStation 2 for herself after winning EME’s online competition.

Lily successfully identified a ‘Danger of Death’ sign from three possible answers after taking part in the competition on EME’s Power Discovery Zone website.

And Jerry Carnell, EME’s safety adviser, was on hand to present Lily with the prizes at a special school assembly.

He said: “The whole idea behind powerdiscoveryzone.com is to communicate electrical safety messages to schools in a fun way and I’m delighted that Lily has been able to use her knowledge to win a great prize for herself and £1,000 for her school.”

Elise Tiplady, Head Teacher of Claremont Primary School, said: "The whole school is really grateful to Lily and EME".

“The prize has been very encouraging for us as we want to improve the school’s out of class recreational facilities".

“The children on the school council have lots of ideas about what they want to buy and are looking forward to spending the money.”

East Midlands Electricity is relaunching the Power Discovery Zone website later in the year. There will be a number of exciting competitions and prizes on offer, a new teacher’s section with print off worksheets, as well as a host of fun projects and activities for children.

Jerry Carnell said: “We’re going to make a good site even better. The material on the site will continue to support the National Curriculum for science at key stages one and two and the new teacher’s site will provide step by step guides for fun and educational activities.”
