26 September 2002 00:00 East Midlands Electricity pedal the patch for charity

Staff from East Midlands Electricity have today completed a 200-mile charity bike relay.

Employees from the company began pedalling the East Midlands region yesterday in a bid to raise money for the company’s charity of the year, Cancer Research UK.

The ‘Pedalling the Patch’ sponsored relay event was split into seven legs, each leg starting and ending at an East Midlands Electricity (EME) site. Riders started in Hinckley before moving on to Pegasus Business Park in Castle Donington. The next groups rode on to finish legs at Bilborough, Moorgreen, Huthwaite, Sleaford and Northampton. The final group ended the relay back at Hinckley today.

Over 70 staff took part in the relay, with less energetic employees helping run a support van and refreshment point for the cyclists. Those who opted to stay indoors ran a lottery but instead of using lottery balls, they numbered the cyclists. The winning numbers were generated by the rider who completed each leg first.

EME’s Andrew Neves, who had the initial idea and who also helped organise the relay, said: “The event has been a great success thanks to the enthusiasm and generosity of the staff. We hope to raise around thousands of pounds and that money will be used to help fund the Cancer Research UK laboratories.”
