26 June 2002 00:00 EME’s van-tastic idea!

EAST Midlands Electricity (EME) has taken delivery of the industry’s very first customer support vehicle, which will travel to help communities that are suffering in the event of a power failure.

The support vehicle – a Vauxhall Movano – has been fully adapted and fitted out with office facilities and power points. On board will be three customer service specialists. The team will be able to provide customers with advice and support including, where appropriate, hot drinks and baby-care facilities.

The vehicle contains useful equipment such as torches, blankets and instant heat pads. The vehicle will also act as an information point where people can collect any appropriate forms needed because of the power cut.

East Midlands Electricity has over 37,000 customers in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, therefore, If there is a power failure, the vehicle will be sent out to the Town Square, library or other public space, in areas deemed to be highly vulnerable. The severity and length of the power cut, and the age of the population, will decide vulnerability.

EME is believed to be the first company to offer such facilities to its customers and has received praise from Energywatch for its efforts.

Phil Wilson, EME Customer Operations Manager, said: “After we had a spate of bad weather, which led to a number of power cuts, we realised a mobile support unit would be useful for keeping customers informed of our progress in restoring their supplies.

“It also provides a good focal point for EME in the community and I’m sure its presence will be appreciated by our customers.”

Phil added: “In an ideal world the vehicle wouldn’t go anywhere because the network would be working perfectly. However, should the need arise then we are ready to go!”

Use of the vehicle will be evaluated over the coming months, with a view to extending the scheme if it is successful.
