22 April 2002 00:00 The Power Discovery Bus is in town - Belmont School
Pupils at Belmont School will be climbing onto the East Midlands Electricity’s Power Discovery Bus for a journey into the land of electricity safety.
Nearing the end of a successful first year of operation, the Power Discovery Bus has now visited 4,500 children at over 70 schools in the East Midlands region. The bus was launched in order to take key safety education messages into schools and is designed to teach schoolchildren about electricity safety in an interesting and innovative way.
The Power Discovery Bus is a mobile exhibition centre and workshop that has two separate areas. The first is where safety videos are shown and the second is filled with interactive displays, including a hand wind generator, an arc generator, a plasma ball and an electroscope. There is also a ‘Hazard Valley’, a large landscape model featuring rural and urban scenes with many potentially hazardous situations to spot. The children can also build electrical circuits to make buzzers, motors and lights work.
An EME employee is also on hand to support the children’s learning through a range of activities.
Jerry Carnell, East Midland Electricity’s Safety Advisor, said: “The whole idea behind the Power Discovery Bus was to take an important safety message to a large number of school children, whilst supporting the national curriculum. We’ve been really successful in doing that and long may it continue.”
